José Guedes da Silva

José Guedes da Silva (Porto, 1955) lived in the Azores between 1959-1970, returning there in 1982. He currently lives in Angra do Heroísmo.
He began his career as a photographer in Lisbon in 1975 as a theatre photographer. He has published his work in various Portuguese and foreign newspapers, catalogues, magazines and books. He has exhibited in the Azores, Lisbon, Canada and the USA. He has taken part in several solo and group exhibitions.
His solo exhibitions include A Luz e o Silêncio - Impressões Sobre Prata and Festas do Senhor Espírito Santo - Promessas ao Divino. He has several of his works in museums and private collections in Portugal and abroad. He has published the books Pedras da Maia, Azores, Pelo Sinal do Espírito Santo, O Sul de Nossa Senhora da Boa Morte, Basalto Azul, Cores da Terra, and most recently, O Barreiro da Faneca. He has taught photography in professional technical courses and training actors. He recently attended the Institut Royal du Patrimoine Artistique in Brussels, where he studied Radiography and Infrared Reflectography as a means of diagnosing works of art. Photography and radiography of works of art have been the focus of his activity, and he is responsible for the Photography and Radiography Laboratory at the Azores Study, Conservation and Restoration Centre.
