FPM #7 | mapping form - works from the PLMJ Foundation collection
Synopsis

The exhibition explores different pathways of thought and visual experience, traversing poetic, aesthetic and political imaginaries. It draws on the sculpture, painting and drawing sections of the PLMJ Foundation’s collection.

The concept of mapping, reflected in the exhibition's title, is typically linked to the graphical representation of territory. Here, however, the concept extends beyond geography to encompass the psychological and visual landscapes that are shaped by the forms which structure our individual and collective experiences. These landscapes emerge in a contemporary environment that is flooded with a constant stream of images and endless reproductions of formats and content.

The exhibition draws inspiration from A Thousand Plateaus: Capitalism and Schizophrenia (MillePlateaux) by Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari. In this work, mapping is understood as an open-ended and unpredictable process that continually evolves in a manner similar to artistic creation itself. As they write:“The map is open and can be connected in all of its dimensions. It is detachable, reversible and open to constant modification. It can be torn apart, reversed, adapted to different kinds of constructions, prepared by an individual, a group or a social formation. It can be drawn on a wall, conceived as a work of art, constructed as a political action or as a meditation.”

Following the authors' critical framework, the act of mapping is understood as rhizomatic rather than hierarchical. It is characterised by multiple points of entry and continual reinterpretation, rather than by replication or tracing.

The exhibition therefore takes on a performative dimension, embracing the plurality of meanings generated through its construction and presentation.
