Exhibition ‘an itinerant gaze’ at BAG Leiria
Synopsis

an itinerant gaze: works from the PLMJ Foundation Collection

This exhibition can be approached from two main perspectives. Firstly, as an itinerant gaze over the territory that the PLMJ Foundation has explored since its inception. Secondly, as a roaming gaze over the artistic panorama of new generations within the wider universe of the CPLP (Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries), a focus that has shaped the contemporary art collection from the outset.

The exhibition invites and challenges viewers to construct their own path through unfamiliar territories and imaginaries present in the diversity of works by artists from different generations. Some of these are being revisited and others are being shown for the first time, particularly in the case of more recent acquisitions.

The variety of media and themes in the exhibition offer different perspectives. They link the world of work with the social condition of women, heritage with the global world, fiction with fantasy and desire, methods of creation with the language of materials, and the depiction of nature with industrial construction, from modernity to the present day.

Art and life come together in an intimate relationship that encourages flânerie*, recalling Baudelaire – an itinerant path formed through wandering and in each of our gazes.

Flânerie refers to the act of wandering without a precise destination, observing the urban space and its movements attentively. The figure of the flâneur, popularised by Charles
