Loan conditions

The PLMJ Foundation promotes cultural exchange by lending artworks from its collection to Portuguese and international institutions. These loans are intended for temporary exhibitions organised by museums, art centres, or other recognised cultural institutions. However, they may be granted for longer periods, provided that the terms are agreed upon by all parties involved. 

1.  Loan application 

Applications must be submitted in writing at least three months in advance (ideally) of the planned start date of the loan, either by email to fundacaoplmj@plmj.pt or by letter to the address of the PLMJ Foundation.

The proposal must include: 

  • Detailed information about the exhibition (title, theme, dates and location) 
  • A list of the requested artworks (title, date, technique and dimensions) 
  • A conservation, security and transport plan 
  • ‘Nail-to-nail’ insurance approved in advance by the PLMJ Foundation 
  • Catalogue or editorial plan (if applicable) 

2.    Assessment 

The PLMJ Foundation reserves the right to assess the feasibility of the loan on a case-by-case basis, taking into account the following: 

  • The condition and availability of the artwork 
  • The environmental and security conditions of the exhibition space 
  • The cultural importance of the proposed project  
  1. 3.    Conditions 

The loan applicant will be responsible for all costs associated with the loan. These include: 

  • Specialist transport 
  • Insurance
  • Frames or special packaging (if necessary) 
  • Production of graphic materials, if applicable  

The loan will only take effect upon the signing of a loan agreement between the parties for this purpose.

4.    Conservation and return 

The artworks must be returned by the loan applicant within the agreed timeframe and in exactly the same conditions as they were in when delivered by the PLMJ Foundation.
