Sérgio Pombo

Sérgio Pombo (Lisbon, 1947-2022) was a Portuguese painter and one of the first to take part in the hyper-realist movement in Portugal.
He studied engraving at the Sociedade Cooperativa de Gravadores Portugueses and graduated in painting from the then Escola Superior de Belas Artes de Lisboa in the 1970s. He received scholarships from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Portugal from 1976 to 1979 and in Germany from 1992 to 1993.
He was one of the leading members of the 5+1 group, made up of João Hogan, Júlio Pereira, Guilherme Parente, Teresa Magalhães, Sérgio Pombo, and Virgílio Domingues.
His solo exhibitions include Giefarte, Lisbon (2008); Artistas Unidos, Convento das Mónicas, Lisbon (2007); Artistas Unidos, Teatro Taborda, Lisbon (2006); Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian - CAM, Lisbon (2001); Galeria Edicarte, Funchal (1999).

He was part of the Portuguese representation at the São Paulo Biennial in 1982. In 1983 he received the Engraving Prize of the Banco de Fomento Nacional.
His works are in the collections of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation's Centre for Modern Art, the Ministry of Culture, the European Parliament, and the PLMJ Foundation, among others.
