Rui Chafes (Lisbon, 1966) studied sculpture at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon. From 1990 to 1992, he studied at Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, where he translated Novalis's Fragments. Since the 1980s, he has exhibited in Portugal and abroad, representing Portugal at the 46th Venice Biennale (1995) and the 26th São Paulo Biennale (2004).
Notable solo exhibitions have been held at CAM of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Serralves Museum, and Centro Cultural de Belém. He has participated in group exhibitions such as Inklusion/Exklusion and En la piel de toro.
His work is included in major collections, including S.M.A.K., the Reina Sofia Museum, and the Serralves Foundation.
He has received awards such as the Robert-Jacobsen Prize (2004) and the Pessoa Prize (2015). In 2022, he held a major exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Serralves, Porto, and in 2023, the exhibition Gris, Vide, Cris at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.
