Ricardo Valentim

Ricardo Valentim (Loulé, 1978) lives and works in New York. He studied Fine Arts at Ar.Co in Lisbon and between 2004 and 2006 he completed an MFA in Sculpture at the School of Visual Arts in New York. Then between 1999 and 2003 he completed a degree in Anthropology at ULHT in Lisbon.
He works in a variety of media, including radio, print, photography and sculpture. Since 2006 he has been producing graphic materials, including posters, leaflets and more, to complement his lectures and video work. This process reveals the transformation of the immateriality of these components into a materialised form that is printed on the graphic materials.
He has exhibited regularly since the early 2000s, in both solo and group shows. His recent solo exhibitions include Ricardo Valentim/Rita Sobral, at the Sala do Veado of the MNHN in Lisbon (2002); Ricardo Valentim, at the Galerie Schuster in Frankfurt (2003); More 'Primitive' Forms, at the Visual Arts Centre in Coimbra (2004); Film Festival, at the Pedro Cera Gallery in Lisbon (2006); Lecture n.1 (Lectures on Light), at the Legion in New York (2006); Film Festival, at E-flux in New York (2007); Ricardo Valentim, at the Pedro Cera Gallery in Lisbon (2008). He has also realised projects such as Art Statements for Art 38 Basel (2007); Art Premiere in collaboration with Pedro Barateiro, Art 39 Basel (2008); Exhibition *04 at Espaço BES Arte e Finança (2009); Growth and Culture for the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art Foundation (2012), among others. He has won the Heineken CA20 Prize at ARCO in Madrid (2011), the Rema Hort Mann Foundation Prize in New York (2010), the Sommerakademie Prize in Bern and the Ron Brugal Emerging Artists Prize at ARCO in Madrid (2008).
His work is represented in various national and international collections, such as the Serralves Foundation (Porto), the PLMJ Foundation (Lisbon), the Ilídio Pinho Foundation (Porto), the Helga de Alvear Collection and the Frac Ile-de-France-Le Plateu.
