René Tavares

São Tomé e Príncipe

René Tavares (São Tomé and Príncipe, 1986) is a contemporary artist who lives and works between Lisbon and São Tomé. He graduated in Visual Arts from the Escola Superior de Arte e Design (ESAD).
He has been presenting his work since 2010, with notable solo exhibitions such as Territórios de Resistência, Galeria 111, Lisbon (2021), Raízes, Centro Cultural de São Tomé (2019), and Fragmentos de Memória, Museu Nacional de São Tomé (2017).
Among his group exhibitions are Afrotopia. Gulbenkian Foundation (2019), Em Contato, Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art (2018), Novos Olhares, Centro Cultural de Belém (2017), and Arte Contemporânea em Diálogo, Museum of Modern Art of Bahia, Brazil (2015).
He has received awards such as the EDP New Artists Award (2020) and the Contemporary Art Prize from the PLMJ Foundation (2018). His work is part of significant collections, including the PLMJ Foundation, the Serralves Foundation, the EGEAC-CML Collection, and the State Contemporary Art Collection.
