Maria José Cavaco

Maria José Cavaco (Ponta Delgada, 1967–2022) was a Portuguese visual artist, known for her painting, with 18 solo exhibitions throughout her career. She graduated in Painting from the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Lisbon, in 1990. She began teaching at the age of 23, working in secondary education and at the University of the Azores between 1994 and 2020. She participated in group exhibitions in Portugal, Spain, the USA, and Macau, including Horizontes Insulares in the Canary Islands (2010) and an exhibition at the Fundação Carmona e Costa (2011). She received the Artistic Creation Grant from the Regional Government of the Azores (2012) and the António Dacosta Painting Prize (2016). Her works are part of collections such as the PLMJ Foundation and the Carlos Machado Regional Museum.
