Lawrence Weiner (New York, 1942–2021) was an American conceptual artist whose work was based on language as an artistic form. He participated in major international exhibitions, including multiple editions of Documenta in Kassel, the Venice Biennale (1972, 1984, 2005, 2013), and the Whitney Biennial (1972, 2000, 2006, 2014). He held influential retrospectives such as As Far As The Eye Can See (2007–2009), presented at the Whitney Museum and MoCA Los Angeles. His works are part of collections such as MoMA, Tate Modern, Centre Pompidou, Guggenheim Museum, and Dia:Beacon, EDP Foundation and other national collections. In 1968, he published Statements, a fundamental work of Conceptual Art, where he argued that art could exist independently of its material execution. His work expanded into public space interventions and collaborations with music and cinema.
