Portugal

JOSÉ DRUMMOND is a Portuguese artist currently based in Lisbon, after spending three decades in Macau and Shanghai. His artistic practice unfolds as a poetic investigation of in-between spaces — across cultures, disciplines, and temporalities — where reflections emerge on impermanence, transience, and the ways identity fragments and transforms.

The process and experimentation in the studio occupy a central place in his practice, which is understood simultaneously as an experimental laboratory and an archaeological site. It is within this space of tension and speculation that Drummond combines and reorganises visual and textual references from a personal universe that brings together Eastern and Western knowledge, from science to fiction.

His research re-examines the coexistence of opposing forces within a shared relational plane. From this interconnectedness emerge hybrid symbioses and rhizomatic assemblages, proposing new relationships between matter, technology, memory, imagination, fullness, and emptiness.

Working across a diversity of materials, media, and languages, his practice results in neon works, installations, objects, video, photography, drawing, and painting.
