José Barrias (Lisbon, 1944 - Milan, 2020) lived in Porto between 1950 and 1967, where he briefly attended the Escola Superior de Belas Artes do Porto. After a stay in Paris in 1967-68, he settled in Milan. He held his first solo exhibition in 1972 and represented Portugal at the Paris and Venice Biennales (1980 and 1984, respectively).
His work has been widely showcased in solo and group exhibitions, particularly in Portugal and Italy. The exhibition Etc..., held in 1996 at the Centro de Arte Moderna of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon, offered a comprehensive display of his oeuvre, which had previously been presented in a fragmented manner. Among his more recent exhibitions were José Barrias: In Itinere at the Serralves Museum in Porto (2011) and José Barrias: Correspondências at the História e Arte Gallery in Bragança (2014).
