Catarina Marques Domingues

Portugal

She graduated from ESAD Caldas da Rainha and completed her master’s degree at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Lisbon.

Her practice spans drawing, photography, video, and performance, grounded in a close observation of the natural world surrounding her mountain studio—earth, water, living matter. She reflects on femininity as openness and birth. Her images bear witness to a deep awareness that the body we are does not belong to us—a body pierced by the joy of being, here and now.

Given the importance of reading in both her intimate and artistic journey, she co-founded the publishing house Sr. Teste, editing and graphically composing an intimate library of her favourite authors, creating expanded reading relationships with invited visual artists. In 2023, she curated the exhibition The Practice of Infinity Through Reading at the invitation of the Centro Cultural Vila Flor (Guimarães), bringing together works by 30 contemporary artists.

Recent exhibitions include A Gesture, All the Drawings, curated by João Silvério at the Centro de Artes de Águeda, part of the 2024 cycle Drawing as Thought. She also participated in the 2023 cycle curated by Susana Ventura. Her work was featured in The Rumour of the Image, an exhibition of works from the Alberto Caetano Collection curated by José Maçãs de Carvalho at the Centro de Arte Contemporânea de Coimbra. She completed an artistic residency as part of the Vila Franca de Xira Photography Biennial, where she presented several installations curated by Hugo Barata and Ana Rito. In 2023, she took part in the exhibition Só porque foi, e voou at MNAC, in the Millennium Foundation Gallery, in partnership with Umbigo Magazine and coordinated by Ana Rito and José Maçãs de Carvalho.
